The Unwinding of the Text

I don’t have Agaton’s glory!

I don’t write for the sake of retreat,

but for reconciliation with the world.

Usually I have paid for

every letter dearly.

But, skilfully I have arranged

the trifles on which my life depends:

the line starts with the room covered in bookcases.

I have borrowed from the alchemist

the use of the word melancholy

to start the search

for the all-pervading.

Really, that black bitterness should be

placed at the very beginning.

We are present, hence, when the text is being unwound.

THE READING remains,

the rare possibility of survival.
