Pavle Goranović, eng bio

Pavle Goranović (Podgorica, Montenegro). Poet, essayist, editor, and associate member of Montenegrin Academy of the Sciences and Arts.

Pavle Goranović was born on April 5th, 1973 in Nikšić, Montenegro. He graduated from the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Montenegro, Philosophy department (1999), while his MA and his Ph. D. are in the field of the theory of contemporary arts.

Pavle Goranović writes poetry, prose, and essays.

He has published the following books: Ornamentika noći (Ornament of the Night) 1994, Čitanje tišine (Reading Silence) 1997, Knjiga privida (Book of Illusions) 2002, Kako mirišu knjige (How Books Smell) 2008, Tin Ujević i Crna Gora (Tin Ujević and Montenegro) 2008, Cinober (Cinnabar) 2009, Grad punog mjeseca (City of the Full Moon) 2014, Imena čežnje (The Names of Longing) 2015, Poezija (Poetry) 2017, Tin Ujević i ekspresionizam (Tin Ujević and Expressionism) 2020.

He has been given a series of accolades and awards for his literary works: Risto Ratković Award for the best book of poetry published in Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, and Croatia (2009), Trinaestojulska nagrada, state award for results of exceptional importance in the field of cultural and artistic creation (2019), Vito Nikolić Award as the best Montenegrin lyricist (2010/2011), The Miroslav’s Gospel State Award for the best literary, historiographical, and ethnographical work published in Montenegro during three years (2014).

His books and literary works have been translated into many languages (English, German, Italian, French, Russian, Slovenian, Slovakian, Macedonian, Polish, Bulgarian, Swedish, Albanian, Hebrew, etc.).

He is represented in many anthologies of Montenegrin and former Yugoslav poetry, in the New European Poets anthology (USA), and in Anthology of the poetry of the Slavic lands, Grand     Tour A Journey Through the Young Poetry of Europe (München,  Germany), etc.

Some of these particular publications are Book of Illusions in Slovenian, Angels of Indifference in Macedonian, Lost Seasons in Albanian, and Reading of the Silence in English. Disappearing City, his book of poetry, was published by Edition Korrespondenzen from Vienna (2020).

His poetry has also been presented in the graphic map TaGoT (the bilingual edition that includes the artworks of Rajko Todorović Todor and poetry by Novica Tadić and Pavle Goranović). Also, as a publication of Ratkovićeve večeri poezije (the annual festival of poetry in Bijelo Polje) the multimedia edition titled Pavle Goranović: An Anthology (anthology includes artworks by Lidija Nikčević, with the recordings of his poetry recited by Žana Gardašević-Bulatović, Petar Novaković, and Vladimir Savićević)

He has also edited the following publications: the anthology of the contemporary Montenegrin poetry and prose in the Italian language (Dalla montagna near, Lecce 2010); selection from the poetry by Leso Ivanović (Jutra jugova, the first edition, Cetinje 2010; the second edition with additional material, Cetinje 2011); the anthology Što vidiš?: savremeno crnogorsko pjesništvo (Zagreb 2005); the monograph Ratkovićeve večeri poezije  (Bijelo Polje 2006); The Poetry of the Members of the Montenegrin Academy of Science and Arts Poezija (poezija članova Crnogorske akademije nauka i umjetnosti, Podgorica 2018); selected works by Radovan Zogović (Izabrana djela Radovana Zogovića, consisting of two volumes, Podgorica 2019); Prose works by the members of the Montenegrin Academy of Science and Arts (proza članova Crnogorske akademije nauka i umjetnosti, Podgorica 2020).

He has edited and authored numerous texts for catalogs and monographs of literary artists.

Based on his poetry works, the theatre Dodest from Podgorica, staged a play Song for the Organs of Saint Cecily, adapted and directed by Džoni Hodžić.

He has also edited collections of contemporary Montenegrin literature published in Italy, Slovakia, Croatia, Macedonia, and Slovenia.

He is a member of national and international literary organizations (CDNK, Montenegrin PEN Centre). He was a representative of Montenegro in the Committee for Education to the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, as well as a member of the Council for Qualification.

He was a member of the Council for the Movement for an Independent Montenegro.

He was the chairman of the Board of Directors of the Forum for Slavic Cultures, an international organization that promotes the preservation of cultural values and traditions in the area of Slavic lands, whose headquarters is in Ljubljana. He is a member of the National Council for Culture.

Between 2003 and 2010 he was an adviser to the prime minister of the Government of Montenegro. In 2010 he was appointed director of the Bureau for Schooling of Montenegro. From 18 March 2015 to 28 November 2016 he was the Minister of Culture in the Government of Montenegro. From November 2016 to March 2017 he was a deputy in the Parliament of Montenegro and chairman of the Board for Education, Science, Culture, and Sport.

He has the status of a prominent creator in the field of culture of Montenegro.

His bibliography consists of more than 2000 units (collected and edited by Vera Đukanović, MA, and published by the National Library of Montenegro „Đurđe Crnojević“, Cetinje, 2020).

He was elected an associate member of the Montenegrin Academy of the Sciences and Arts on 18 December 2015. He is the editor of the gazette of the art division in the Academy of Science and Arts of Montenegro.
